Robert Price has been preparing thoroughbreds for many years.
He made his start in the racing world riding track work under the tutelage of K.J. Robinson in the early 1980s. After which time he then had his first success as a trainer with his first horse – a tried racehorse called Phantom King – in 1992. Rob has since had many winners including the stakes performers Red Ivory and Kosta Nothin’.
He has also had many city winners with horses like Belle Voyage, Keeping the Faith, Art Official,
One Way Ticket, Trinity Song, Fuel, Step Forward and his most
recent string of city winners has included Druid, Ivory
Pegasus and the ever consistent Gunna Happen -
most of these making their mark since the start of 2009 alone.
Rob and his wife Patricia have overseen operations at Turpentine Park for the last
12 years.
It was Rob who planned and assisted the Dickerson family in the creation of Turpentine Park in 1997. In that time Rob was responsible for overseeing the career of his son Luke Price – which saw him as one of the leading apprentices in Sydney riding in excess of 110 winners. Luke is now stable foreman at Turpentine Park. Luke and Rob personally ride the track work on the property and at the racetrack trials. It is this hands-on approach to training which gives the Price family a distinct edge in preparing their thoroughbreds to race.

Rob is an approachable and communicative trainer
who prides himself on his client relationships and his personal integrity. He is always available to discuss horses with clients and readily makes himself available to inspect yearlings at all the major sales for anyone interested in purchasing. It was this keen eye that saw Rob purchase a bay filly by a relatively unknown sire back in 1995 for $4,750 at the Scone yearling sales. That filly went on to race as Red Ivory – a multiple black type earner and matriarch of the Turpentine Park broodmare band
with her foals One Way Ticket and Ivory Pegasus going on to
continue in the family tradition with wins at Randwick.
This keen eye for purchasing inexpensive racehorses that go on to perform at the highest level
has seen Rob have luck with numerous city performers purchased with relatively small capital. As a horseman Rob Price is capable of purchasing “champagne horses” on a “beer budget”.
Rob is married to Patricia Price, daughter of the legendary south coast trainer K.J.Robinson
KJ
who was second to none in the industry. It is this wealth of background, combined with a genuine love and respect for the land and the horse that makes this family a force to be reckoned with in the racing industry.
Whether it is having a horse trained, putting together the perfect package of owners for a syndicate, or purchasing from a yearling sale – Robert Price is the ideal choice. With the opportunity of training in an idyllic setting – literally racehorse heaven – the combination and ability to prepare city winners at a fraction of the costs of city trainers, is too good to resist.

The huge cost advantage for having a horse trained by Robert Price at Turpentine Park comes from not having to pay all those “incidental” expenses that all the major city trainers put back on to their clients. NO swimming fees, minimal transport fees, NO track fees, NO transport fees when spelling as agistment is done on the property, NO track rider fees, NONE of those hidden costs that make racing a horse TWICE as expensive. |
